Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH-04) significantly outraised many of his colleagues in Ohio’s congressional delegation during the final quarter of 2019, including both of the state’s U.S. senators.
Jordan’s campaign hauled in almost $1.4 million during the fourth quarter of 2019 and reported having $1.8 million in cash on hand. His campaign said Jordan’s “profile has been on the rise” after he received a prominent role in President Donald Trump’s impeachment defense team.
The Ohio congressman has been making the rounds on cable news defending Trump against the Democrats’ impeachment case, which he says amounts to nothing more than “presumptions, assumptions, and hearsay.”
On the other end of the spectrum was Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH-13), who raised just $137,883 during the fourth quarter and had $98,342 in cash on hand, the least of any area member of Congress, according to an analysis from The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Ryan spent most of 2019 campaigning for president and appeared numerous times on the Democratic debate stage.
He dropped out of the race in late October after failing to qualify for a debate in his home state.
Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) raised $540,168 during the final quarter while Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) raised $272,939. Portman and Brown won’t face reelection until 2022 and 2024, respectively. Portman reported having $3.8 million in cash on hand and Brown said he has $1.3 million stored away.
A campaign spokesperson attributed Jordan’s cash influx to “people seeing all the unfairness going on in Washington, and those people wanting to support the few that are standing up against that unfairness.”
Jordan said “it’s time for the president to be acquitted” during a press conference after the Senate voted against calling witnesses in the impeachment trial.
“17 to 0 is enough. The good news is the Senate is not going to call any more witnesses. They don’t want 18 to nothing. They don’t want 19 to 0. They don’t want 20 to 0 and we know that would be the case. If another witness was called next week, then the Democrats would never stop,” said Jordan, referencing the 17 witnesses called in the House. “It’s time for this to end.”
